Construction starts at St Michael’s Primary School, North Melbourne.

After completing a number of smaller scale projects for St Michaels Primary School, over recent years, our latest and largest project to start on this site will be completed over two stages. It will eventually double the school’s student capacity, which is a diverse multicultural community that incorporates a transient group of students from the Royal Children’s Hospital nearby.  With an inner city land locked location, major road interface, limited available play space and historical buildings to consider, the existing fabric of the school has played an important role in our design response and in the selection of the construction technique required to realise the built form.

Stage 1 of the project includes 4 new indoor learning spaces and associated outdoor play spaces. Our design solution is to elevate the new building off the ground on a large concrete podium to create an undercroft that can be utilised as play space as well as creating a new rooftop play space. In order to achieve the design solution, fast track the works and have minimal impact on the day to day running of the school, a modular construction system will be used.

Stage 2 includes another 4 classrooms, with the design solution this time to reuse an existing building and add structure above whilst being sensitive to the adjacent heritage interface. Again we will be utilising modular construction.

Lloyd group have been awarded to contract to build stage 1. With a contract value of $4.4m it is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.
